If your hearing aids aren’t working properly, don’t panic! In many cases, devices that seem “broken” simply need a battery replacement or a basic clean. Let’s go through some of the most common problems and how to resolve them.

Hearing aids are highly effective for managing hearing loss, but they need regular care. Most everyday issues can be resolved in minutes with a little attention.

What are the most common hearing aid problems?

  • Distorted or fuzzy sound 🔊

  • Whistling/feedback noise 🎶

  • No sound at all ❌

  • Not loud enough 🔉

🔊 Distorted sound

If your hearing aids sound fuzzy, crackly, or unnatural:

  • Earwax buildup: This is one of the biggest culprits. Wax can block the microphone(s) or receiver.

  • Microphone blockage: Most modern hearing aids have an IP68 rating (water and dust resistance up to a limit) however, this doesn’t stop moisture or dust from blocking the microphone(s)

  • Clogged filters (wax guards): These need regular replacement.

  • Volume set too high: Over-amplification can create distortion.

👉 What to try:
Clean the device carefully, replace wax guards, and lower the volume slightly. If distortion persists, it may need professional servicing.

🎶 Feedback (whistling sound)

That high-pitched squeal is called feedback:

  • Improper fit: If the hearing aid or ear mould isn’t snug, sound leaks out and loops back in.

  • Earwax build-up in your ear: Causes sound to be reflected back out of the ear

  • Broken domes: Especially in behind-the-ear models.

  • Volume too high

  • Objects near ear: Hats, phones, or even hugging someone can trigger it.

👉 What to try:
Reinsert the hearing aid properly, check for wax, and lower the volume. If it keeps happening, you may need a refitting or updated programming.

❌ No sound / dead hearing aids

If they suddenly stop working:

  • Dead or incorrectly inserted battery

  • Damaged/faulty receiver

  • Moisture damage

  • Device not turned on or faulty switch

  • For rechargeable models: charger issue or dead rechargeable battery

  • Blocked receiver and/or microphone(s)

👉 What to try:
Replace or recharge the battery, check all openings for blockages, and make sure everything is switched on. If still silent, it likely needs repair.

🔉 Not loud enough

If you’re struggling to hear even with them in:

  • Low battery

  • Incorrect settings or program

  • Blocked microphone(s) or receiver

  • Hearing changes over time

  • Improper fit causing sound leakage

👉 What to try:
Increase volume if possible, clean the device, and ensure you're using the correct program. If it still feels weak, your hearing may have changed and you’ll need a reassessment.

👩‍⚕️ When to see a professional

If basic troubleshooting doesn’t fix the issue, it’s best to see an audiologist. They can:

  • Replace receivers and domes

  • Replace rechargeable built in battery

  • Reprogram the device

  • Check for internal damage

  • Adjust the fit

  • Test if your hearing has changed
